Latest Restaurant Review – Jenko’s Mongolian Barbeque

We hadn’t had the Mongolian BBQ experience for a long time, probably years in fact so we were looking forward to trying out Telford’s unique dining menu.

It was cold, wet and windy so the warm cosy seating area with open fireplace was very welcoming, considering the main restaurant is presented in the massive, incredible log cabin the restaurant was surprisingly warm.  The Restaurant is decorated with many Mongolian features such as clothing, artwork and each table candle-lit creating a very romantic environment, great for couples!

As you walk through to the restaurant you can see food being prepared on the huge circular hotplate and a huge selection of fine ingredients tempting your taste buds before you even sit down.

We soon had the menu in our hands and selecting our starters, I chose the Spinach Tartlets which were home baked with a melt in your mouth pastry and served with a coulis of Port and sun dried tomatoes priced at £4.50 and Ann, my wife opted for the Garlic Mushrooms, fresh mushrooms cooked to perfection in a creamy wine and garlic sauce served with Ciabatta also priced at £4.50.

My Spinach Tartlets were divine; pastry cooked to perfection and were as they claimed ‘melt in your mouth’ a highly recommended starter! Ann’s Mushrooms were equally as good, extremely creamy and full of flavour, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Now for the Mongolian BBQ priced at £17.50 per person, you can return as many times as you like, so I would recommend that you don’t pile your dish up on your first visit, like I did!  There are so many dishes you can create with so many ingredients available, fish, meat, vegetables, sauces, spices and so on. Meat is carefully selected from local butchers and most ingredients sourced locally.  I selected a mixture of my favourites, king prawns, chicken, and plenty of vegetables combined with a few spices and a BBQ sauce and Ann chose mostly fish and vegetables.  Help is at hand if you are unsure what you would like to create and a few recipes on display to follow if you wish.  I presented my dish to the chef, who carefully cooked my creation right in front of me, and Ann did the same, several dishes can be cooked at the same time to avoid any waiting time.

To complement your creations, you can then choose from noodles, rice or pasta or a bit of each, I chose the noodles and Ann the rice.  Heavenly home-made crispy chips are also available which unfortunately we forgot to order but the table next to us didn’t and they looked divine!

10oz Steaks are also available and for £25.50 you can enjoy the steak and the Mongolian menu, which is very good value considering you can still return as many times as you like.

Our meals were perfectly prepared and full of flavour, flavours we had chosen which we were quite proud of!  We may have taken a little too many ingredients on our first visit and was feeling a little full and needed to leave room for desserts.  Next time, I would make sure not to put too much in my bowl to enable me to taste several other recipes!

After a short break, we browsed the desserts, which did all sound pretty fantastic, most priced at £5.50.  I chose the Banoffee Cheesecake with a topping of rich banoffee toffee, fresh banana and a light caramel sauce.

Ann decided on the Banana Pavlova, which was a combination of meringue, fresh banana, fresh cream and a homemade treacle toffee sauce topped with flaked almonds.

Wow, when they arrived they looked incredible and very generous portions, both tasted divine, full marks for desserts!

Jenko’s also offer a Carvery Sunday lunch, priced at £11.95 for adults and £6.95 for children up to the age of 12, I can highly recommend it.  They will also deliver your lunch to you if you are local for £9 plus a £2 delivery fee, which is incredible value.

If you are looking for an evening that is a little different then Jenko’s is worth a visit, it is a unique dining experience in Telford and surrounding areas.  I would recommend that you book first!
