Latest Restaurant Review (The Shrewsbury Arms)
The Shrewsbury Arms is located on the High Street in Albrighton and is just a five minute drive from J3 of the M54. The grade II listed building is full of character and retains many original features. The well established pub and restaurant has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.
We had decided to visit on a Thursday evening which is steak night, the special steak menu has a great selection to choose from, all steaks are sourced from award winning local butchers. You can also order from the main menu if you prefer. If you order two meals from the steak menu you will receive a free bottle of wine (includes house white, red or rose), which is an amazing deal.
The Shrewsbury Arms have just launched their new seasonal menu with a range of exciting new dishes but they have retained some of the old favourites on there too, including their famous hanging kebabs.
As well as the new food menu they have also just launched their new ‘Gin & Cocktail’ menu with a great choice of cocktails and a wide range of gins to choose from and plenty of mixers to make your perfect G&T.
We were seated in the main dining room which is very elegant with its high ceilings, central fireplace and piano in the corner. The tables are well spaced out and there was nice relaxed ambience. While we looked through the menus we ordered some drinks, Nik had a pint of Shropshire Lad and I decided to try one of the many gins available off the new menu, I had the Ultimate Summer Cup.
For starters Nik chose the Black Pudding Bon Bons (£5.75) and I ordered the Duck Spring Roll (£6.75).
Nik’s bon bons were walnut sized balls of quality black pudding, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried giving a lovely golden shell, the crispy balls were served with a cocktail stick to allow easy dipping into the tangy homemade ketchup.
My spring roll was extremely well presented and I couldn’t wait to tuck in. There was a generous filling of soft tender duck which was incased in a lovely light soft pastry which had a slight crispness on the outside, the chilli sauce and sliced fresh chillies added a nice bit of sweetness and heat – a really great dish.
I ordered my main from the steak menu and chose the 8oz Fillet (£22.50). Nik chose a steak dish but this was from the main menu, he ordered the Fillet Steak Pappardelle (£17).
My fillet steak was served with chunky chips, a flat mushroom, slow cooked tomato and onion rings. You could also choose a sauce to accompany your steak, including peppercorn, blue cheese or Diane sauce. My steak was cooked to perfection, exactly how I had ordered it. The onion rings were huge and had a light and crispy batter.
Nik said the home-made pappardelle was perfectly cooked and the mushrooms were soft and meaty, the strips of aged beef fillet were melt in the mouth tender and plentiful. The silky-smooth parmesan cream sauce finished the dish off perfectly.
Although we were both very full we decided to squeeze in a dessert. Nik opted for the Vanilla Crème Brule (£5.50) and I chose the Belgian Waffle (£5.50).
My delicious freshly made Belgian waffle was soft and warm and was served with a lovely butterscotch sauce, strawberries, raspberries and butterscotch ice cream.
The caramelised sugar topping on Nik’s Creme Brule was the right side of golden and broke easily to reveal the lovely smooth vanilla custard beneath. It was served with two freshly made shortbread biscuits and the largest strawberry I’ve ever seen. A classic dessert and the perfect end to a great meal.
Friday Fish & Fizz nights are very popular at The Shrewsbury Arms, every Friday from 6-10pm – with an additional Fish menu plus great discounts on Prosecco and Champagne, its a great way to start your weekend.
Bottomless Prosecco Afternoon Tea can be booked any day between 12-4pm and is served with unlimited prosecco at just £24.95 per person.
Fixed priced lunches are served Monday to Friday (12-5pm) with a choice of 2 course at £10.95 or 3 courses at £13.95.
Traditional Sunday roasts are served every Sunday from midday until 10pm and the full main menu is also available on Sundays.
There are plenty of reasons to visit The Shrewsbury Arms and I have already booked my next visit with some friends, as I can’t wait to try the afteroon tea with bottomless prosecco!!
